The work on show at Non-Format's Make A Fuss exhibition came about after the design duo of Kjell Ekhorn and Jon Forss underwent a process of exploration into the themes of Pop Culture, fashion imagery and an on-going fascination with modular typography.
The characters that appear in the large black & white posters contain a mixture of iconographic sources that are referenced ambiguously so as to give an impression of familiarity that is rather more of a subtle insinuation than anything distinctly recognizable. As well as the unique characterizations that populate the group of posters, the featured typeface was also produced especially for the Make A Fuss show. Each letterform follows a strict grid that references, to some extent, simplified letter shapes observed during recent trips to the Far East. Single characters are often used in dramatic scale so as to help distinguish themselves as additional members of this strange family of houndstooth-clad individuals.
The title, Make A Fuss, is a reference to the deep-rooted British characteristic of not wanting to appear to be a nuisance which is, rather strangely, quite at odds with much of the creative work that is generated in the UK. British people are taught, from a very early age, not to make a fuss. However, and paradoxically, it is the very essence of disobedience and unrest that appears to drive the creative industries within the UK, and it is also this very sense of noncompliance that is self-evident in the work of Non-Format.
Jon & Kjell urge us all to make an effort, to make a mark, but above all, to make a fuss.
