Work or art? Expression of the plastic arts, or the simple carrying out of an order for the purposes of commercial interest? Is there any appeal in seeing the work exhibited, detached from its original purpose? Can an illustration stand alone outside of its original context? These are the eternal dilemmas of the illustrator, who always puts the setting, idea and function of an image before his own concerns and identity, a creator always at the service of communication.
Berto Martínez tries to keep himself poised on the border between the personal and the distanced, of that which interests him and that which is imposed. He aims to find a language that allows him to manifest himself in the commissioned work, without losing sight of his personal vision and manner of creation, his own way of understanding the image.
From fashion illustration to opinion pieces, Martínez’ work addresses various subjects and reflects on the role of illustration in the media, on its different uses and applications, always in search of new media and formats.
This exhibition brings together a selection of his recent works.
Born in Barcelona in 1973, Berto Martinez is a versatile illustrator whose wide range of interest goes from portraits, lifestyle, art, cinema, and fashion to social issues or interior design.
His main interest is to search for the image’s function in order to apply it in different media, formats and supports. As well as to find the cohesion between text and illustration.
His artistic activities include regular contributions in magazines and newspapers from all over the world to wallpapers for shops and advertising campaigns as well as illustrations for brands like Custo Barcelona, Zara, Alfa Romeo, Uniqlo, Clickair.
Among his clients in press there are publications such as Playboy, W magazine, Casa Brutus, Marie Claire, Io Donna, Cosmopolitan, Madame le Figaro, El País, Creator magazine, Elle and many others.
His work is influenced by modern affiche artists such as Alphonse Mucha, Aubrey Beardsley and Alexandre de Riquer, renaissance drawings by Jean Clouet, Hans Holbein to twentieth century illustration by Patrick Nagel, Maxfield Parrish, René Gruau, Norman Rockwell and Milton Glaser.
